ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਇੱਕ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਸੀ। ਉਸਦੀ ਉੱਮਰ 60 ਸਾਲ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਫ਼ਸਲ ਤਿਆਰ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੰਡੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਐਤਵਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ‘ਤੇ ਕਣਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੋਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਦ ਲਈਆਂ। ਸੋਮਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉਹ ਦਾਨਾ ਮੰਡੀ ਵੱਲ ਚਲ ਪਿਆ ਰਸਤਾ ਕੱਚਾ ਸੀ।
ਪਿੱਛਲੀ ਰਾਤ ਭਾਰੀ ਵਰਖਾ ਵੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਹੌਲੀ-ਹੌਲੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ਦੇ ਪਹੀਏ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਜਾਣਗੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਖੇਤ ਦੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਦੀ ਲੰਘ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਉਸਦੀ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਗਈ। ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢਣ ਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਸਭ ਵਿਅਰਥ (ਬੇਕਾਰ)। ਉਸਨੇ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਲਈ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਲਗਾਈ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਖੇਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਵੱਲ ਕੋਈ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਕਿਸਾਨ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢਣ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਬੜੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਉਸਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਬੇਕਾਰ ਗਈ। ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਸੀ। ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਪੂਰਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਲਗਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਦੋ ਯੁਵਕ ਆਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਬੈਲ-ਗੱਡੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਫ਼ਲਤਾਪੂਰਵਕ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ। ਕਿਸਾਨ ਖੁਸ਼ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਯੁਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਸ਼ੀਰਵਾਦ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
