ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਮਹਿਤਾ ਕਾਲੂ ਜੀ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੀ। ਬੇਬੇ ਨਾਨਕੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਭੈਣ ਸੀ।

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤਮੰਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ। ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਪਾਰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਵੀਹ ਰੁਪਏ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੁੱਝ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਮਿਲੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਈ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਧਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ। ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੁੱਖੇ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਹੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਨਿਭਾਈ ਹੈ। ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਨੂੰ “ਸੱਚਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਦੀਖਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤਮੰਦਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਖਰਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਉਹ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਈ ਕੁੱਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਥਾਂਵਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਵਿਰਾਜਮਾਨ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਮੁੱਖ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ-

‘‘ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ, ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ, ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ।”

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਸ਼ੁੱਧਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਦਾਨਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਤਾਇਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਫੈਲਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਚਾਰ ਦਿਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਰ ਲੰਬੀਆਂ ਯਾਤਰਾਵਾਂ (ਉਦਾਸੀਆਂ) ਕੀਤੀਆਂ। ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ‘‘ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ’’ ਦਾ ਸੰਪਾਦਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੇਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਗਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
