ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਜਾਦੂਈ ਬੌਣੇ ਨੱਚਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਏ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਫਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ।ਉਹ ਚਰਮਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਮੇਜ਼ ‘ਤੇ ਬੈਠ ਗਏ । ਕੁਸ਼ਲਤਾਪੂਰਵਕ ਟਾਂਕੇ ਲਗਾ, ਸੀਂਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਹਥੌੜਾ ਚਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਚਰਮਕਾਰ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਰਹਿ ਗਿਆ । ਜਾਦੂਈ ਬੌਣਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਭੱਜ ਗਏ ।
ਔਰਤ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਮੀਰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ । ਸਾਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਰਸਵਾਰਥ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ । ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਛੋਟੀਆਂ ਕਮੀਜ਼ਾਂ, ਕੋਟ, ਬਾਸਕਟ, ਪੈਂਟ ਅਤੇ ਜੁਰਾਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੋੜੀ ਬਣਾਵਾਂਗੀ ।” ਚਰਮਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਠੀਕ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਦੋ ਜੋੜੀਆਂ ਛੋਟੇ ਜੁੱਤੇ ਬਣਾਵਾਂਗਾ ।”

एक बार एक चर्मकार था। वह इतना गरीब हो गया कि उसके पास अपने परिवार को चलाने के लिए एक जोड़ी जूते बनाने के चमड़े के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं बचा। इसलिए उसने शाम को जूते बनाने के लिए बड़े ध्यान से चमड़ा काटा। वह बहुत दु:खी था। उसने सोने से पहले भगवान से प्रार्थना की और कहा कि वह उसकी मदद करें।

सुबह उसे मेज़ पर जूतों की एक शानदार जोड़ी मिली। वह हैरान रह गया। उसने जूतों को हाथ में लिया और ध्यान से देखा। वे इतनी सफाई से बने थे कि उन पर एक भी भद्दी सिलाई नहीं थी। जूतों की जोड़ी वास्तव में एक श्रेष्ठ कृति (अद्भुत नमूना) थी।
इसके बाद उसकी दुकान पर एक ग्राहक आया। उसे जूते पसंद आ गए और उसने उनकी सामान्य से भी अधिक कीमत दे दी। अब चर्मकार बहुत खुश था, क्योंकि उसके पास इतना धन हो गया था कि वह दो जोड़ी जूतों के लिए चमड़ा खरीद सकता था।
रात को उसने चमड़ा काटा और सुबह उसे सुन्दर जूते तैयार मिले। ऐसा बहुत रातों तक चलता रहा। शाम को जितना भी चमड़ा वह काटता था, सुबह तक खूबसूरती से (जूतों के रूप में) तैयार मिलता था। शीघ्र ही चर्मकार अमीर बन गया।

औरत ने कहा, “उन बौनों ने हमें अमीर बनाया है। हमें उनकी निःस्वार्थ सेवा के लिए उनका धन्यवाद करना चाहिए। मैं उनके लिए छोटी-छोटी कमीजें, कोट, वास्कट, पैंट और जुराबों की जोड़ी बनाऊंगी।” चर्मकार ने कहा, “ठीक है, मैं उनके लिए दो जोड़ी छोटे जूते बनाऊँगा।”

जब सब कुछ तैयार हो गया तो उन्होंने अपने उपहार मेज़ पर रख दिए और छिप गए। आधी रात को बौने आए। वे उपहार देखकर बहुत खुश हुए। दोनों बौने नए कपड़े पहन कर तैयार हो गए। तब खुशी से वे नाचने और गाने लगे। (बौने गीत में अपनी खुशी व्यक्त करते हैं और पति-पत्नी का धन्यवाद करते हैं।)
वे नाचते हुए दरवाज़े से बाहर निकल गए और फिर कभी नहीं आए। चर्मकार सदा के लिए खुशीखुशी रहने लगा।
