1857 ਦਾ ਸਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਧਾਰਨ ਸਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ । ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਥਾਂਵਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਗੁੱਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ਾਸਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਜਵਾਲਾ ਭੜਕ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ । ਬਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਸੀ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਸੈਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਘੱਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ।ਉਹ ਵਿਦਰੋਹ, ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ‘ਤੇ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
ਸਤਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ, ਜੋ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਭੈਣੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮੁਕ-ਦਰਸ਼ਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਨੁਯਾਈਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਸੰਗਠਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ‘ਸੰਤ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਨਾਮਕ ਇਕ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਬਣਾਈ । ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਸੰਪਰਦਾਇ ਨੇ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮਧਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਿਕ ‘ਕੂਕਾ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ। 1872 ਵਿਚ ਕੂਕਾ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਲੇਰਕੋਟਲਾ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ । ਇਹ ਖੇਤਰ Cowen ਨਾਮਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਸੀ । ਮਲੇਰਕੋਟਲਾ ‘ਤੇ ਹਮਲੇ ਦੇ ਦਰਮਿਆਨ 66 ਕੂਕੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਤਮ-ਸਮਰਪਣ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।

ਵਰਿਆਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਾਮਕ ਇਕ ਨਾਮਧਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਕੱਦ ਇੰਨਾ ਛੋਟਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਤੋਪ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਸਕਿਆ । ਉਹ ਇੰਨਾ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੁਝ ਪੱਥਰ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ । ਤਦ ਉਸਨੇ ਬਿਟਿਸ਼ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੋਲਾ ਦਾਗਣ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਲਲਕਾਰਿਆ | ਬਾਰਾਂ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਹੋਰ ਲੜਕਾ ਬਿਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਪਿੰਡ ਰਾਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਮਾਨਸਾ ਦਾ ਸੀ ।ਉਸਦੇ ਟੁੱਕੜੇ-ਟੁੱਕੜੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਬਿਟਿਸ਼ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ Cowen ਦੀ ਦਾੜੀ ਪਕੜ ਲਈ ਸੀ । ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਸੈਨਾਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੌਸਲੇ ਇੰਨੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਸਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਭਲਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਿਟ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ? ਪੂਰਾ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਮਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੇਗਾ । ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਮਹਾਨ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਝੁਕਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੀਰਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਬਲੀਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।

1857 का वर्ष कोई साधारण वर्ष नहीं था। भारत में सभी जगह लोग ब्रिटिश शासन के प्रति क्रोधित थे। उनके मन में ब्रिटिश शासकों को भारत से बाहर निकाल कर स्वतंत्रता पाने की ज्वाला भड़क रही थी। ब्रिटिश सरकार बहुत ही शक्तिशाली थी। परन्तु इससे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों का उत्साह कम नहीं हुआ। वे विद्रोह, संघर्ष तथा युद्ध के मार्ग पर चल रहे थे।
सतगुरु श्री राम सिंह जी जो पंजाब में भैणी साहिब में पैदा हुए थे और वहीं शिक्षा प्राप्त की थी, केवल मूकदर्शक नहीं थे। उन्होंने अपने अनुयायियों का एक संगठन बनाया। उन्होंने ‘संत खालसा’ नामक एक पार्टी बनाई। बाद में इस संप्रदाय ने विकसित होकर नामधारी सिक्खों के महान ऐतिहासिक ‘कूका आंदोलन’ का रूप धारण कर लिया। 1872 में कूका सिक्खों ने मलेरकोटला पर आक्रमण किया। यह क्षेत्र Cowen नामक ब्रिटिश अधिकारी के अधीन था। मलेरकोटला पर आक्रमण के पश्चात 66 कूका सिक्खों ने आत्मसर्मपण कर दिया।

Cowen एक बहुत ही क्रूर तथा कठोर मन का अधिकारी था। उसने आदेश दिया कि उन सभी कूका सिक्खों को तोपों से उड़ा दिया जाए। कूका सिक्खों ने तोप के गोलों का सामना बड़ी बहादुरी से किया। उन्होंने अपनी मातृभूमि की स्वतंत्रता के लिए अपने प्राण न्योछावर कर दिए।
वरियाम सिंह नाम एक नामधारी सिक्ख का कद इतना छोटा था कि वह तोप के मुंह तक नहीं पहुंच पाया। वह इतना बहादुर था कि वह कुछ पत्थर इकट्ठे करके उन पर खड़ा हो गया। तब उसने ब्रिटिश अधिकारी को गोला दागने के लिए ललकारा। बारह साल का एक अन्य लड़का बिशन सिंह गांव रार, जिला मानसा का था। उसके टुकड़े-टुकड़े कर दिए गए क्योंकि उसने ब्रिटिश अधिकारी Cowen की दाढ़ी पकड़ ली थी। इतने ऊंचे थे इन स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों के हौंसले ! उनकी यादें भला कैसे मिट सकती हैं ? पूरा राष्ट्र हमेशा उन पर गर्व करता रहेगा। हम इन महान शहीदों के सामने अपना शीश झुकाते हैं जिन्होंने वीरता एवं शान से अपने जीवन का बलिदान दे दिया।
